The sequel to Avatar, the movie which garnered the highest global box office gross in history, was originally scheduled for a Christmas 2017 release.

But now it's being reported by The Wrap that Avatar 2 has been delayed, and releasing studio 20th Century Fox has declined to set any release date.

This is the second delay for the much anticipated flick, which was originally supposed to debut this Christmas.

Director James Cameron, who has yet to comment on the latest delay, has directed two of the highest grossing films of all time, 1997's Titanic, and 2009's groundbreaking Avatar.

He's famous for his extremely methodical production method and insane attention to detail.

New invention: Indeed, for the first Avatar, Cameron pioneered an entirely new camera system to shoot the 3D spectacle

The timing of the announcement also raises some intriguing questions, as the day before, on Wednesday, Disney announced that the next Star Wars film would essentially take the Christmas 2017 'slot' that Avatar was vacating.

Theoretically, the movies would never be released simultaneously, as so-called tent-pole movies, which are extremely expensive to produce, need access to as many screens as possible to make a profit.

Even more important with these two particular films, Imax has been making up a larger and larger portion of box office revenue, though there are a limited number of the jumbo screens.

Both films would require essentially all of them to perform the way the studios wish them to, and make the maximum amount of money.

While it's unclear whether Star Wars may have motivated the move, or it was simply James Cameron's decision to delay the film, moviegoers will be left disappointed.

The next Star Wars installment was scheduled for a May release in 2017, and has now been pushed back for what Disney hopes is a more lucrative run during the holiday season.

Currently, Avatar still reigns as the highest grossing film of all time with $2.8 billion in global box office receipts; Star Wars: The Force Awakens is number three with $1.9 billion.
